The San Jose Jazz Festival

Logo for SJ Jazz Festival 2010 Every year there are two events my friends know we will not miss! One is the San Jose Jazz Festival in early August and the other is the Hardly, Strictly Bluegrass festival at Golden Gate Park in early October.

Well, the Jazz Festival happened a little later this year (it’s usually on the same weekend as my Birthday, August 8th). This year it occurred on Friday, August 13th through Sunday, August 15th. It was fantastic, as usual!

Now, over the years we have done many different things and hung out at many different stages. In the beginning we would wander all around trying to find our favorite artists. There is certainly something to be said for that but you did not always get the best spot to sit because you would come in late and there are always people that pick a venue and that’s where they hang out pretty much the whole weekend. Let’s face it, they get the primo spots.

People, People everywhereThen we started hanging out primarily at the Latin Stage on San Fernando street. It was a total blast watching the incredible dancers who seemed to love perfecting their moves and showing off for the people in the crowd. Boy, can some of them move their bodies!

A few years later we would find a spot in front of the main stage, right behind the roped off VIP section. I would drive over at 4 or 5 in the morning and locate a spot where I would place our blankets and chairs so that we could come back later in the day and enjoy the many different types of performers that would grace the main stage. Throughout the day we would venture off to the other venues to see what was happening throughout the festival.

Fountains at the FestivalMost recently I have become a big Blues fan and this addiction, if you will, has lasted a good five years and does not appear to be diminishing in the least. That is where I hang out all day, every day. Tom will still venture off to other areas but I am quite content to hang out in my chair and read a good book between performances and work on my tan. This year there were several stand-out performances that I feel I must mention. On Saturday I was delighted to get acquainted with Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums. They were wonderfully upbeat! Later that same day I got reacquainted with Ms. Taylor P. Collins. Wow, did she and her band bring down the house. She had several very talented musicians in her band that had everyone on their feet. Check them both out on iTunes!

On Sunday it was a banner day with a great local band with a wonderful harmonica player, Bill Noteman and the Rockets. We purchased one of his albums which he signed for me. Then, later in the day a beautiful redhead named Carolyn Wonderland from Austin, Texas came out and boy did she give 120% to her performance. Tom wanted to leave to go have dinner and neither of us could break away because she had us riveted with her soulful crooning and wondrous guitar work. And, to top it all off, the Ford Blues Band with Robben Ford. What a total treat. Needless to say, I can’t wait for next year. Maybe you can come on out and join us!
