Mole or Vole???

Vole or Mole? If your yard is riddled with holes or slithery brown trails—or both—you have moles or voles. Or both!

Need help deciphering which visitor is causing so much damage? Here are the basic differences:

Voles look like mice, except with short tails. In spring, they leave behind brown trails in the grass as they cruise around looking for tasty bulbs, plant stems, and bark. The result is a chewed-up garden.

Moles are about the size of chipmunks and have large, flipper-like front paws… perfect for tunneling through your yard. They eat only insects, worms, and grubs, not plants. They aerate the soil and get rid of insect pests, but create annoying tunnels.
