Home Maintenance – Winter

Preparing Your Home for Winter

With winter fast approaching here are some simple things you can do around the house to save m0ney and enhance your life!

Program your Thermostats – Before the temperatures drop, set your thermostats at a comfortable level, perhaps 68%. Then keep them there. It’s much more cost efficient to maintain a temperature than to change it. If your thermostats are not programmable, you may want to consider replacing them.

Clean your House – Replace dirty filters in your furnace and forced-air systems. Doing this will let more heat in and can decrease your monthly bills by 5 to 30%.

Stop those Drafts – To locate a draft, light a candle and move it around windows and doors. Where it flickers, you probably have a draft. One solution would be to add weather stripping or caulk around the area as needed.

Insulate – Measure your hot water heater for an insulating blanket. Next, cover any connecting pipes and then the heater doesn’t have to work so hard.

Replace Batteries – Change all the 9 volt batteries in your smoke detectors.
