Solar Post Caps Light Up the Night

Solar Post CapsThe night garden’s a beautiful thing—if only you could see it!

You could turn on your yard lights, but that’s overkill. And walkway lights can make a yard look like an airport runway, with only the ground being brightly lit.

That’s why we’re intrigued by this lighting option: solar-powered post caps. These attractive caps, which fit standard 4×4-inch deck or fence posts, look pretty by day and provide broad, appealing illumination by night.

Each light has two rechargeable batteries and four bright white LED bulbs, which last much longer than standard bulbs. No wiring is required for installation, and there are a number of styles to choose from, including stained glass (shown), copper (shown), white and black.

The night-time garden is ready to be unveiled!

Green Grass Without the Fuss

Green GrassYou know what they say: The grass is always greener—at someone else’s house! Having a lush lawn seems like it should be easy. But we all know the truth. Between watering, fertilizing, mowing, and weeding, it takes a lot of hard work and resources.

If you’re ready to trade out your high-maintenance turf for something less fussy, we’ve got a suggestion: Try planting a low-care grass. No Mow seed mix (Zones 3 to 7) is perfect for cool, moist regions and does well in average soil. Mowing isn’t required. It’s a short grass that forms a soft, swirling pattern, although if you want a more manicured look, you can mow it every month or so.

Living in a hotter climate? Opt for Low Work and Water seed mix. A blend of six dwarf fine fescue grass varieties, this mix is specially designed to create deep-rooted, dense turf that needs little water once established.

Lose the frustration and gain a pretty lawn!

Sun Hats: Protection Plus Style

Sun Hats
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest gardener of all? It could be you, if you wear a hat to protect yourself from the sun! Here are a few we like:

  • Real Deal Brazil’s Original Tarp Hat (top left) is made from recycled tarps discarded by Brazilian trucking companies. The fabric is tough yet pliable enough to bend and shape to your liking.
  • Classic Raffia Sun Hat from Womanswork (top right) shields your face and neck. The raffia weave is breathable and blocks more than 95 percent of UVA and UVB rays.
  • Peaceful Valley’s Gardener’s Sun Hat (bottom left) is serious about sun protection, with 360-degree coverage and a UPF rating of 50. It’s made of lightweight, breathable nylon.
  • Duluth Trading Co.’s Women’s Crusher Hat (bottom right) also boasts 50+ UPF protection. This pretty topper can be balled up and stored, but it won’t wrinkle. Other features include mesh sides and a leather cord.
