Entertaining 101

by on May 9, 2010

I don’t know about you but I used to love lists.

I would list out all the people who were coming to my party and then I would cull through all my Bon Appetit’s and put together the perfect menu and then I would plan the food prep and what I could do ahead of time and finally I would put together the shopping list, wrestle the credit card from hubby and race to the store to get all my purchases.

Then it was cook, clean, arrange, cook, clean and stress some more. Finally the guests would arrive and I would be exhausted. And frankly, I’m not sure if I got to have fun or not!

Mind you, there is a time and a place for an event like that but I try to only have one of those per year at Christmas time and that’s it.

About 10 years ago I resolved that I was going to get done with everything at least an hour before my guests arrived so that I could relax for a few minutes and enjoy an adult beverage and read a book (or post to twitter, nowadays) before my guests arrived.

It has been a great thing because I am more relaxed and have much more fun. I have also abandoned the lists and stopped worrying about the dust bunnies and decided to focus on my friends.

True friends are not going to notice the dust bunnies and will cherish a few minutes of conversation a lot longer than a perfectly clean house.

So, throw away the lists, keep it simple and resolve to have lots of fun with great friends this summer!
