Cat Bhalou

Bhalou - Ready to PounceAs many of you may know, we had a wonderful cat named Smokey for 17 Years. He was totally awesome. He died about a year ago. I wanted to bring a new kitten in to our lives but Tom was very reluctant to make this happen, perhaps because of the challenges of raising a kitten to the furniture as well as the wear and tear on our hands and legs.

Well, we FINALLY convinced Tom that it was time to bring a new kitten into out lives. One of Heather’s friends, Amanda, had 2 cats who were going to have kittens and Amanda was faced with the daunting task of finding homes for all of them. We did our part, claiming a handsome young male with pretty brown tiger stripes.

My hands and legs are none too happy about this, (ouch, oh, ouch!) but the rest of the family is. (Except maybe Diezel, the bulldog, who is not very happy that he is NOT the center of attention, all the time). We are doing our best to shower Diezel with love and attention, and lots of doggie treats, so I think it will be OK.

Bhalou was not really sure what to make of his new big brother, especially when the first thing he did was sniff him and promptly sneeze in his face. Needless to say, the cat would arch his back and hiss every time Diezel came along. That has since changed and now the cat has started to find many entertaining ways to torment Diezel, which I’m sure will continue to occur for many years to come.

Bhalou’s favorite pastimes are eating and sleeping, not necessarily in that order. Now, that schedule has been augmented with play, chew or pounce on anything that moves and generally get in as much mischief as possible until he is just too tired to even stand. Then he will take a cat nap, eat a little bit more and start the cycle all over again. Playing and exploring are definitely two of his favorite things to do. Getting laughs from us with some of his antics are definitely an enjoyable by-product of our relationship.

Soon we are going to try a new experiment, the BARF diet. BARF stands for ‘bone and raw food’ diet, which is designed specifically for cats but can also be used for dogs, so Diezel is going to participate in this experiment as well. I will definitely keep you posted on the outcome!

In the meantime, I must get back to being chewed alive. 😉
